COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Hove:

(Warwicks 20pts, Sussex 4pts)

Left-arm spinner Ant Botha took 5-51 as Warwickshire wrapped up an innings victory on the fourth morning at Hove to increase Sussex's relegation fears.

The hosts began the day on 113-3, still 61 runs behind - but Botha struck early, trapping nightwatchman James Kirtley and Carl Hopkinson lbw.

Boyd Rankin removed the gritty Andrew Hodd for 33, and Botha went through the tail as Sussex were skittled for 172.

Warwickshire are now safe from the drop and could finish as high as second.

Rankin had removed Murray Goodwin in the final over of Friday's play, but Kirtley and wicketkeeper Hodd had added 20 for the fourth wicket before Botha grabbed two wickets in the space of six balls.

Kirtley was leg before trying to force Botha away off the back foot, while Hopkinson failed to deal with an arm ball from the South African.

Despite Hodd's rearguard action, his 202 minutes of resistance were ended when he edged Rankin to Jonathan Trott at first slip - while the big-hitting Dwayne Smith lasted just five balls, hitting two fours before nicking a superb delivery from the Irish seamer, giving Tim Ambrose a catch behind the stumps.

Ed Joyce, batting down the order at eight as he had not fielded because of a hip injury, then became Botha's third lbw victim in four overs.

Indian spinner Piyush Chawla did hoist Botha for a huge six as they tried to scramble the runs to force Sussex to bat again, but he and Ollie Rayner fell in quick succession and in almost identical fashion, prodding catches to Bears skipper Ian Westwood at short leg.

Botha, whose economy had strangled Sussex the previous day, walked off with figures of 36-15-51-5.

Warwickshire, bidding to win the Pro40 Division Two title, now face two floodlit day-night games at Canterbury and The Oval before their Championship finale against Lancashire at Old Trafford, starting on 23 September (1030 BST).

Sussex host Yorkshire this Wednesday (16 September, 1030 BST) in a crucial Championship relegation battle, before visiting Trent Bridge for their final game against Nottinghamshire the following week.
