Robert Key hit his fourth County Championship century of the season
|
Kent captain Robert Key and Martin van Jaarsveld led their team to safety with unbeaten centuries to put a dent in Derbyshire's promotion hopes. Needing 302 to avoid an innings defeat, Kent completed the day in comfort at Derby on 339-2. Key batted through the final day to hit 141, his fourth County Championship hundred of the season. He put on an unbroken 194 for the third wicket with Van Jaarsveld, whose 101 was his sixth ton of the summer. The draw takes Kent a step closer to a return to Division One. But Derbyshire drop to fourth, thanks to second-placed Northants' win over Middlesex on Friday and third-placed Gloucestershire's innings win against Surrey. Kent are now 26 points clear at the top and looking nailed on for the first automatic promotion spot, with three games left. But, only three points separate the teams in second, third and fourth. And fifth-placed Essex and sixth-placed Glamorgan are still both well in touch, with a game in hand.
