Rob White and Stephen Peters both hit half-centuries to give Northants' promotion charge a boost with a six-wicket win over Middlesex.

White (85 not out) and Peters (73) took the hosts to their target of 220 for the loss of four wickets.

Earlier, Davis Lucas took 4-43 as the visitors were bowled out for 207, despite 94 not out from Gareth Berg.

Northants go second in Division Two, but that could change depending on Derbyshire's result at Kent.

Beginning the day on 17-3, Middlesex were soon 29-5 with Adam London and Neil Dexter edging to wicketkeeper Niall O'Brien from Johannes van der Wath (3-32) and Lucas respectively.

With Shaun Udal unable to bat because of a head injury, Middlesex were plunged into deeper trouble when Dawid Malan was trapped lbw by Monty Panesar.

But Berg added 100 with John Simpson (41) and 53 with Murali Kartik (29) to at least give the Middlesex attack something to bowl at.

Northants may have feared a collapse of their own when O'Brien fell for a duck in the second over, but Peters and Alex Wakely calmed the nerves by taking the score to 65.

Hearts were sent fluttering again when Wakely and Riki Wessels were both trapped lbw in the space of three Murali Kartik deliveries, but White stopped the rot.

He and Peters added 55 for the fourth wicket and, when Peters was caught by Dexter off Tim Murtagh, Nicky Boje (30 not out) arrived to help guide the hosts home.
