Off-spinner James Tredwell took five wickets to finish with match figures of 10-100 as he helped Kent to a 238-run victory over Northants at Wantage Road.

Needing to bat out the day to avoid defeat, Northants were bowled out for just 90, with only Niall O'Brien (41) and Rob White making double figures.

Tredwell took 5-32, with Simon Cook and Rob Ferley each taking two wickets.

Earlier, Kent declared on 302-5, with Martin van Jaarsveld 100 not out, to set the hosts 328 to win.

After the Division Two leaders began the final day on 220-2, Kent made their intentions clear when wicketkeeper Geraint Jones hit the sixth ball of the morning off Nicky Boje for six.

Boje had his revenge four overs later, bowling Jones for 93 and then quickly removing Darren Stevens and Sam Northeast before Justin Kemp saw van Jaarsveld through to three figures.

Needing to bat 70 overs to save the game, Northants lost opener Stephen Peters, trapped lbw by Cook, before lunch.

White was caught at deep square leg off Cook just after the break, before Tredwell announced his arrival into the attack by accounting for Alex Wakely and Riki Wessels.

O'Brien and Boje took the score to 71, but when the South African was trapped lbw by Ferley, it sparked a collapse which saw the home side lose their last six wickets for 19 runs.
