Shah ton not enough to deny Kent

PRO40 DIVISION TWO, Canterbury:
Kent 258-4 beat Middlesex 246 by 12 runs
(Kent 2pts, Middlesex 0pts)

Middlesex went down to a 12-run Pro40 Division Two defeat to Kent at Canterbury, despite a 94-ball 130 from discarded England batsman Owais Shah.

Shah hit 14 fours and four sixes as Middlesex were bowled out for 246 in the 39th over chasing 259 for victory.

Young seamers Mat Coles and Warren Lee each took three wickets for Kent.

Earlier, Darren Stevens (75 not out), Geraint Jones (73) and Joe Denly (66) were the main contributors to the home side's score of 258-4.

After winning the toss, Kent lost Robert Key and Martin van Jaarsveld, before Denly and Jones shared a third-wicket stand of 89.

When Denly was caught and bowled by Middlesex skipper Shaun Udal, Stevens arrived at the crease to smash six fours and three sixes in a stand of 95 with former England wicketkeeper Jones.

In reply, Middlesex trio John Simpson, Tyrone Henderson and Gareth Berg all fell with the score on 132 to leave the visitors six down before Shah and Ben Scott added 98 for the seventh wicket.

But when Shah was brilliantly caught by Justin Kemp at mid-off from the bowling of Lee, Kent scraped home.
