Essex record first Pro40 victory

PRO40 DIVISION ONE, Southend:

(Essex 2pts)

Essex recorded their first Pro40 win at the third attempt as half centuries for Ryan ten Doeschate and Varun Chopra set up a 34-run win over Nottinghamshire.

Chopra (51) and ten Doeschate (64no) helped Essex reach 224-8.

Spinner Danish Kaneria then weaved his magic with the ball, taking 3-28 as Notts were bowled out for 190, Samit Patel top scoring with 58.

But defeat at Southend leaves Notts bottom of Division One after two games, still looking for their first win.

Chopra had been the mainstay of the Essex innings until ten Doeschate's unbeaten 64 from 50 deliveries, containing two sixes and three fours, most of which came in a sparkling eighth-wicket partnership of 55 in six overs with Mervyn Westfield.

The main man with the ball for Nottinghamshire was 20-year-old fast bowler Andy Carter, who turned in an impressive 3-32 from eight lively overs on his senior debut for the county.

And the Notts innings began encouragingly, Ali Brown and Mark Wagh putting 60 on the board by the 10th over for the loss of only one wicket.

But then the visitors faltered, mainly as a result of some magnificent work by James Foster behind the stumps.

He pulled off superb catches to get rid of Brown and Wagh for 36 and 27 respectively, and went on to finish with five victims, including a neat stumping to remove Darren Pattinson.

Essex coach Paul Grayson told BBC Radio Essex:

"We could actually be sat here top of the table with three wins from three. But, in the last two Pro40 games, we've come up just short.

"We posted 263 against Sussex in our first game and could not defend that, then we went down to Cheltenham and ran up 191 in 18 overs and could not defend that either.

"We've been a bit soft lately but we had a bit more aggression about us today and the boys responded.

"At one stage we were looking at 190 or so but ended up getting a good score thanks to that late onslaught and then we bowled well too."
