Bottom side Middlesex wrapped up a 47-run win over Division Two leaders Kent inside three days to record their first Championship victory of the season.

Beginning on 49-2 in pursuit of 334, Kent lost Joe Denly early before Martin var Jaarsveld (54) and Sam Northeast (37) added 75 for the fourth wicket.

But when van Jaarsveld fell, the hosts lost seven wickets for 73 runs.

And, despite last man Amjad Khan's 61 not out, Kent were bowled out for 287, spinner Murali Kartik picking up 4-53.

After Denly (25) nicked Steven Finn (2-62) to Kartik at slip in the fifth over of the day, van Jaarsveld and Northeast took the score to 128 before the South African edged Gareth Berg to Eoin Morgan.

First innings top scorer Darren Stevens was then trapped lbw by Tim Murtagh (2-70) for just four to signal the start of Kartik's destruction of Kent's late order.

His 20 overs between lunch and tea reaped 4-37 as Northeast was caught by Dawid Malan, Justin Kemp and Azhar Mahmood were both trapped lbw and James Tredwell was bowled.

Last pair Amjad, who struck eight fours and a six, and Simon Cook (27), then added 86 in 20 overs to entertain the corporate clients in the Canterbury Cricket Week marquees.

But, when Cook was pouched in the slips by acting skipper Morgan off the bowling of Murtagh, it gave Middlesex their first Championship win in Kent since 1983.
