Ramprakash century holds up Leics

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, The Oval:
CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY THREE: Surrey 311-2, Leicestershire 593-5dec
(Surrey 4pts, Leics 4pts)
31 July - 3 August 2009

Mark Ramprakash
Ramprakash made his fourth century of the season from 166 balls

Mark Ramprakash struck his 107th first-class century as Surrey moved close to securing a draw with Leicestershire on day three at The Oval.

Ramprakash struck 27 fours and one six in an unbeaten 174, as Surrey closed the day on 311-2 in reply to Leicestershire's 593-5 declared.

He was supported by captain Stewart Walters (84 not out) as the pair shared an unbroken third-wicket stand of 236.

Surrey still need 133 to avoid the follow-on, with one day remaining.

After Leicestershire declared overnight, Surrey opener Jonathan Batty was bowled for a duck by AJ Harris in the first over of the day.

Ramprakash and Michael Brown (46) then took the score to 75 before Brown was caught by HD Ackerman off the bowling of Claude Henderson.

But this was to be Leicestershire's final success of the day as Ramprakash reached his ton in 166 balls and Walters made a patient 120-ball half-century.

Meanwhile, Surrey could be without paceman Andre Nel for the rest of the season.

The South African has aggravated an elbow injury and will require surgery to repair a ruptured ligament.
