Thomas adds to Taunton run spree

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Taunton:
CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY TWO: Somerset 510, Hampshire 83-0 (Somerset 5 pts, Hampshire 3 pts)

10-13 July 2009 (Play starts 1100 BST)

Alfonso Thomas
Thomas had not previously hit a 50 for Somerset in any form of cricket

Alfonso Thomas hit his Somerset best as the home side were finally bowled out for 510 on day two against Hampshire.

James Hildreth took his overnight 124 on to 155 before being caught at mid-on off James Tomlinson (3-119).

But South African paceman Thomas then struck 10 fours in his 70 off 147 balls before being last man out.

On another belting Taunton batting strip, Hampshire openers Mike Carberry and James Adams then reached 83 in 14 overs before rain called a halt at tea.

After resuming their first innings on 368-6, centurion Hildreth and Thomas extended their seventh-wicket partnership to 87 either side of a 55-minute break caused by the day's first shower.

Big pace bowler David Stiff then hit a huge straight six off leg-spinner Imran Tahir over the Sir Ian Botham Stand and two fours in a partnership of 53 with Thomas before being stumped.

But Andy Caddick did not last long - and had little more success with the ball.

The former England fast bowler, attempting a comeback after back surgery at the age of 40, failed to take a wicket in the previous Championship game against Yorkshire, his first appearance of the season.

And he was soon taking a pasting as Carberry and Adams produced some sweetly-timed strokes, removed from the attack after shipping 40 runs from six overs.

Somerset are seeking a fourth successive Championship win. But, despite Hampshire still being well short of the 361 they need to avoid the follow-on, the home side look unlikely to get that victory unless their bowlers on day three.
