Cornish school in national finals

Cricket

A Cornish cricket team are through to the finals of the National Schools Kwik Cricket Tournament at Headingley.

The team from St Hilary School in Penzance are currently both Cornwall and South West champions and now face the rest of the country on 16 July.

The team's coach Greg Harris, told BBC Radio Cornwall it is fantastic to be representing the South West again.

"To do it once is memorable, but this is the third time in four years that we're going to the finals," he said.

Around 13,000 schools take part in the annual Kwik Cricket Tournament and St Hilary are now through to the last 16.

"It is a big day out," Harris said. "On our previous trips to the Nationals we went to Trent Bridge and last year we went to Grace Road."

As well as preparations for the finals on the pitch, St Hilary have the added issue of travel and accommodation to organise.

Harris said although the logistics are complicated, the effort will be worth it.

"At present we're looking around to find out how to get from Penzance to Headingley, where we're going to stay, how many parents might want to go, but I'm glad I've got this headache," he said. "I'm absolutely delighted."
