COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Edgbaston:
CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE. Rain. Warwickshire 5-1. Sussex yet to bat.
7-10 July 2009 (Play starts 1100 BST)
Frustrated Ian Bell did not get to face a ball at rain-lashed Edgbaston
Ian Bell had a wasted day at Edgbaston as Warwickshire faced only four overs after being put into bat by Sussex in their Division One basement clash.
Bell had been released from the England squad, but kept on standby in case of a last-minute emergency at Cardiff.
But his hopes of a substantial innings were washed away almost as soon as he reached the middle.
Tony Frost was lbw to Yasir Arafat from the last ball of the third over, but Bell did not get to face ball.
Instead, home skipper Ian Westwood played out a maiden from Corey Collymore.
Overnight rain had already delayed the start by an hour. But Warwickshire only had time to reach 5-1 from four overs in a 15-minute session before the first of the day's heavy downpours.
The ground staff worked tirelessly to mop up a large amount of surface water but their efforts went to waste when another shower wrecked plans to resume.
And, within half an hour, umpires Barry Dudleston and Peter Willey took the inevitable decision just before the scheduled tea interval and called off play for the rest of the day.
