Compton ton cannot force victory

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Lord's:
CLOSE OF PLAY, FINAL DAY: Surrey 392 & 99-5 drew with Middlesex 385 & 246-5dec
(Middlesex 10pts, Surrey 10pts)

Nick Compton's previous highest score for Middlesex this season was 44

Middlesex batsman Nick Compton hit his first Championship century of the season, but Mark Ramprakash's unbeaten 49 secured Surrey a draw at Lord's.

Resuming on 38-0, an unbeaten ton from Compton enabled the hosts to declare on 246-5, setting Surrey 240 to win.

Steven Finn (2-29) and Murali Kartik (2-26) put the visitors under pressure, but Ramprakash's two and a half hour knock staved off defeat on 99-5.

Ramprakash now averages over 100 in 13 first-class innings against Middlesex.

In the nine years since he crossed London from Lord's to The Oval, Ramprakash, who had already hit 136 in the first innings back on former home soil, has now hit four centuries against his old county. And he has amassed an amazing 1,058 runs at an average of 105.8.

Middlesex are still without a Championship victory this season. But Surrey remain in the Second Division top three, 15 points behind leaders Gloucestershire.
