Owais Shah
Owais Shah has been left out of England's Ashes squad this summer

Owais Shah took centre stage as he smashed 159 to help Middlesex to 269-5 on the first day at Lord's.

The England batsman hit 23 fours in a majestic 252-ball knock before being eventually caught by Stewart Walters off the bowling of Andre Nel (2-31).

Billy Godleman, with a more watchful 48 off 200 balls, helped Shah put on 157 for the second wicket.

Neil Dexter (14) and nightwatchman Steve Finn (2) then fell late on to give Surrey something to cheer.

Pakistani off-spinner Murtaza Hussain claimed Dexter's wicket while Finn was trapped lbw by Chris Jordan.
