Sean Ervine and Dimitri Mascarenhas starred with bat and ball as Hampshire beat Essex by six wickets to advance to the quarter-finals of the Twenty20 Cup.

Batting first, the hosts made 149-6, thanks largely to Graham Napier (47) and Ryan ten Doeschate (43), Ervine taking 3-26 and Mascarenhas 2-14.

The visitors looked in trouble at 87-4 after Grant Flower had taken 3-25.

But Ervine (39) and Mascarenhas (27) shared an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 66 to send Essex crashing out.

After Essex won the toss, Mascarenhas removed openers Mark Pettini and Varun Chopra, before Ervine dismissed Matt Walker, Flower and Napier to leave the home side struggling on 89-5.

But the innings was given momentum by Ten Doeschate and wicketkeeper James Foster (23), who added 60 for the sixth wicket in just five overs.

Napier then struck to remove Jimmy Adams (17) with the Hampshire score on 29, but Essex had to wait until the visitors had reached 81 for their next success.

At this point, Flower dismissed Michael Lumb, Michael Carberry and Imran Tahir for the addition of just six runs.

But there were five balls to spare when Ervine and Mascarenhas saw Hampshire to a quarter-final meeting with Northants at Wantage Road in the last week of July.
