Alastair Cook hit a century in his last innings for Essex before the Ashes as his side eased to an 84-run win against Surrey in the Twenty Cup at The Oval.

Cook finished 100 not out from 57 balls, with 11 fours and three sixes, to score his first Twenty20 century.

He shared an opening stand of 169 with Mark Pettini (87) as the visitors racked up 210-3.

Surrey then crumbled to 126 all out in 15.2 overs and are now unable to make the quarter-finals.

In contrast, Essex go second in the South Division, a point behind Sussex, who have played a game more.

After winning the toss, Pettini struck 10 fours and four sixes in his 53-ball effort, as he and Cook complied the second highest opening stand in Twenty20 history.

In reply, Surrey lost openers Scott Newman and James Benning, both bowled by Graham Napier (2-19), with just 12 on the board.

Afzaal and Ramprakash then shared 48 for the third wicket, but when Afzaal was trapped lbw by Ravi Bopara, Danish Kaneria (2-13), James Middlebrook (2-28) and Ryan ten Doeschate (2-26) combined to steamroller the rest of the Surrey batting.
