Gloucestershire picked up three wickets in barely an hour to take the advantage on a truncated day at the Brit Oval.

James Franklin (2-11) bowled Laurie Evans and Michael Brown, and Jon Lewis (1-5) trapped Matthew Spriegel lbw to leave Surrey struggling on 18-3.

Earlier, the visitors added just 12 runs to their overnight score of 321-8, with pacemen Andre Nel and Jade Dernbach each picking up four wickets.

Only 16 completed overs were bowled on a day shortened by rain and bad light.

The home side did not start their reply to Gloucestershire's 333 until after 5pm but saw Franklin enjoy prodigious swing with the experimental Tiflex ball, plucking out Evans' middle stump.

After another break for bad light, the visitors caused havoc in the further 25 balls they managed, Franklin also re-arranging Brown's stumps and Lewis inducing Spriegel to miss a late away swinger to be trapped in front.
