Dippenaar steers Foxes to victory

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Grace Road, day three:
Leicestershire 208 & 190-2 beat Derbyshire 194 & 203 by eight wickets
Leicestershire 18 pts, Derbyshire 3

Leicestershire wrapped up their Championship campaign in style as they beat Derbyshire by eight wickets with a day to spare at Grace Road.

The visitors were collapsed from 106-2 to 203 all out as Sam Cliff claimed 4-42 and Garnett Kruger 3-45.

It left Leicestershire to score 190 and a stand of 145 between Matthew Boyce and Boeta Dippenaar made their first win for nearly four months a formality.

Boyce was caught for 68 but Dippenaar finished the job with an unbeaten 84.

Derbyshire had the upper hand at start of play, leading by 71 and with openers Steve Stubbings and Paul Borrington looking to extend an unbroken stand of 85.

But it was soon cut short as Kruger prompted Stubbings (44) to edge to the keeper and Cliff made it a double success when Borrington (41) was caught by Dippenaar.

The South African also accepted a chance offered by Dominic Telo (13) to give Kruger a second wicket and Daniel Redfern, Greg Smith and Graeme Wagg all followed in quick succession.

Tom New, on-loan from Leicestershire, held up his clubmates with 36 before Kruger ended his resistance and Cliff proved too much for the tail.

After that, it was merely a question of whether Leicestershire could complete the job before close of play.

They soon lost their Greg Smith for eight, caught by Borrington off Wayne White, but Boyce and Dippenaar were soon peppering the boundary.

Wagg, who has agreed a new three-year deal with Derbyshire, conceded 65 from 13 wicket-less overs as the home side closed on their target.

They were just 34 short when Boyce fell to Smith's medium pace but Dippenaar achieved his highest score of a disappointing summer as Leicestershire completed only their third win in 16 matches.
