When Shantry collected his third wicket, as Riki Wessels edged to second slip after lunch, Northants were reduced to 103-4.
Overcast skies greeted play after tea with Klusener and O'Brien taking the
hosts past 200 before bad light stopped play after 73 overs.
The teams returned after only a 10-minute delay, but only four balls were bowled before proceedings ended for the day.
