Sussex pair deny Surrey victory

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Division One, The Oval, day four:
Surrey 455 & 171-7 dec drew with Sussex 328 & 154-3
Surrey 11 pts, Sussex 8

Surrey remain rooted to the foot of the Championship table after failing to force a win over defending champions Sussex at The Oval.

Skipper Mark Ramprakash delayed his declaration until after lunch, leaving Sussex a target of 299 off 62 overs.

And although loan signing Alex Tudor took two wickets in one over, Chris Nash and Carl Hopkinson calmed Sussex nerves with a stand of 123.

Nash made 71 not out and Hopkinson an unbeaten 47 as they ended on 154-3.

The pressure was on Surrey to force the pace at the start of play after 11 Championship games this summer without a win.

But they spent 32 overs adding 94 to their overnight 77-2 for the loss of five wickets before Ramprakash, who departed early in proceedings for 43, called a halt.

Sussex off-spinner Ollie Rayner enhanced his reputation with 3-56, having Jon Batty caught as he attempted a reverse-sweep, bowling James Benning first ball and then picking up Tudor's wicket when he edged to slip.

Michael Yardy, the Sussex skipper, was given a round of applause by the crowd when he arrived late following the birth of his second child, and he soon had a chance to head off to see the new arrival again when he was caught at backward point off Matt Nicholson for 11 as his side began their second innings.

Tudor then had Michael Thornely caught behind with his first delivery and removed Murray Goodwin with the help of a short-leg catch later in the same over.

But that was the final flickering for Surrey's hopes of forcing a win as Nash and Hopkinson played out time with a degree of comfort.
