Willoughby brace checks Hampshire

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP, DIVISION ONE, the Rose Bowl, day one (close):
Hampshire 113-4 v Somerset

Only 50 overs were bowled because of rain on the opening day at the Rose Bowl, as Hampshire closed on 113-4.

Play did not begin until 1330 BST, and acting Somerset skipper Andy Caddick, at the helm in place of back injury victim Justin Langer, lost the toss.

James Adams, in his first Championship game since May, shared an opening 47 in 18 overs with Michael Carberry.

Left-arm seamer Charl Willoughby later took two wickets in five balls before rain sent the teams off for the day.

In addition to the return of Adams, there was an opportunity for England U-19 all-rounder Liam Dawson.

With coach Paul Terry, standing down at the end of the season, again absent, Giles White took charge of the side.

Peter Trego made the breakthrough with the wicket of Carberry lbw, then deceived Adams with a slower ball in the 26th over, before taking a one-handed return catch diving forward.

Willoughby ensured Somerset had the better of the opening day exchanges with his double success in the 45th over.

Chris Benham got an inside edge onto his stumps and Nic Pothas drove to cover.

Before play began, Hampshire chairman Rod Bransgrove presented a county cap to pace bowler James Tomlinson, who has taken 51 Championship wickets already this term.

"Receiving my county cap is a dream come true and something I have worked incredibly hard for," 26-year-old Tomlinson said.

"I have enjoyed delivering a consistent performance on the field and I will continue to concentrate during this extremely crucial time of the season."
