Prolific Rashid boosts Yorkshire

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Division One, Rose Bowl, day two (close): Hampshire 236 v Yorkshire 236 & 0-0

Adil Rashid took career-best figures as Yorkshire and Hampshire each made 236 in their first innings to leave their Championship match evenly poised.

Rashid (7-107) demolished the Hampshire middle order with some sharp turn on a slow Rose Bowl surface as Hampshire lost seven wickets for 41 runs.

They drew level thanks to a last-wicket stand of 38 in eight overs between David Balcombe and James Tomlinson.

In the morning session, Yorkshire put on 30 after resuming on 206-7.

Overnight pair Jacques Rudolph and David Wainwright were out in the space of four balls after a useful stand of 75 for the eighth wicket.

Wainwright was the first to go to a catch at the wicket and then Rudolph was also caught at the wicket off Chris Tremlett before Tomlinson sent back Matthew Hoggard to wrap up the innings.

Tomlinson finished with 5-53 to give him 47 wickets for the first class season, the best in the division.

Tremlett took 2-61 and Hampshire looked well on course to overhaul Yorkshire's modest score when they reached 157-2, but then Rashid came into his own and once more boosted his hopes of international recognition.

The 20-year-old leg-spinner began Hampshire's problems by trapping Michael Brown leg-before, before dismissing Michael Lumb, Chris Benham and Nic Pothas in quick succession.

Pothas had earlier averted a hat-trick after Rashid had Lumb caught at silly point, before removing Chris Benham to a ball which kept low.

He returned later to have Tremlett stumped charging down the wicket and then dismissed Imran Tahir to a catch at slip.

It was appropriate that Rashid should finish off the Hampshire response when Tomlinson, who had made an aggressive 22, was caught close to the wicket by Anthony McGrath.

Young left-arm spinner David Wainwright also found some turn to have Sean Ervine stumped attempting a big hit and then sending back Hampshire captain Dimitri Mascarenhas leg before wicket to finish with 2-28.

Hampshire's top scorer was Michael Carberry, who made 46 before edging Rana Naved-ul-Hasan to wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy.
