Sales ton puts Northants on top

County Championship D2, Wantage Road (day one, stumps): Northamptonshire 274-4 v Leicestershire

Northants batsman David Sales struck a superb unbeaten 113 as they gained the upper hand on the first day of their championship game with Leicestershire.

Sales came in with Northants struggling on 51-2, but he put on 114 with opener Stephen Peters (65) as they recovered.

He also shared an unbroken stand of 90 with Lance Klusener, who finished on 44 not out, to leave Northants 274-4.

Dillon du Preez was the pick of the bowlers as he took 2-54 from his 19 overs for Leicestershire.

Foxes captain Paul Nixon won the toss and put the hosts in, which looked a good decision when Niall O'Brien nicked a du Preez delivery to Boeta Dippenaar at second slip for nine.

Rob White looked well set with Peters, but he edged Jim Allenby to Nixon when on 20 and that brought Sales to the crease.

Sales and Peters plundered the bowling as they took control of the match, though Leics did hit back when Tom New took Peters' wicket and Du Preez saw off Riki Wessels.

But Sales reached three figures by smashing Tom Smith for four and Klusener hit six boundaries in his late cameo as the home side took the honours on the opening day.
