Derbyshire put themselves in a strong position against Northants with a solid batting display at the County Ground.

The visitors ended day one on 352-6, with Jonathan Clare (58no) and Graham Wagg (81no) at the crease.

Paul Borrington (57), Wavell Hinds (76) and Greg Smith (50) also contributed half-centuries.

David Wigley gave Northants hope with a spell of three wickets in 10 balls while David Lucas also took three wickets but Derbyshire hit back.

That was in no small part down to Wagg, who reached 50 from just 61 balls.

He and Clare took their stand to 141 at the close.
