Lancs on top as Hampshire labour

County Championship D1, Rose Bowl, day one (close):
Hampshire 248-9 v Lancashire

Andrew Flintoff had little chance to stake a claim for a place in the England side as Lancashire restricted Hampshire to 248-9 at the Rose Bowl.

Flintoff bowled 14 overs and took 1-29 as the home team struggled before bad light and rain stopped play.

Michael Brown hit 48 and wicketkeeper Nic Pothas top-scored with 62 as Hampshire toiled after winning the toss and electing to bat.

Glenn Chapple took 3-33 with some fine swing bowling for Lancashire.

Hampshire made a terrible start to their innings when Michael Carberry fell third ball to Chapple, before Brown and John Crawley put on 48 for the second wicket.

Flintoff dismissed his former Lancs team-mate Crawley, with the batsman edging the all-rounder to Stuart Law at slip for 11.

Hampshire continued to lose wickets at regular intervals and were fortunate Pothas was not run out without scoring after a direct hit from Lou Vincent.

Dimitri Mascarenhas and Greg Lamb both made it to the 20s before losing their wickets as Sajid Mahmood and Gary Keedy picked up two apiece.

Pothas struck Keedy for two sixes on the way to his highest score of the season before he swung at a Chapple delivery, with Flintoff holding on to a waist-high slip catch.
