Van Jaarsveld celebrates after hitting the winning runs at The Oval
|
Martin van Jaarsveld's second century of the match sealed a four-wicket win for Kent against Surrey at The Oval.
Kent resumed needing a further 92 runs to win, with five wickets intact.
Van Jaarsveld and Geraint Jones took them within 30 runs of victory before the former England wicketkeeper edged a wide delivery to first slip for 39.
Yasir Arafat was dropped two overs later but Van Jaarsveld, who reached his ton with a four to long-on, flicked Saqlain Mushtaq for four to win it.
It was a remarkable performance from Van Jaarsveld, who is the first Kent player to score a century in both innings and take five wickets in the same match, and only the 12th in first-class history.
He was dropped twice in his second innings but sealed victory with his boundary off spinner Saqlain past short-leg.
"I'm completely humbled," the South African said. "Not in my wildest dreams
did I think that I would have a match like this.
"I have had two centuries in a match before, but this has to be the number
one, especially when you throw in the five wickets."
