Kent frustrated by patient Batty

County Championship D1, The Oval, day two (close):
Surrey 397 v Kent 235-7

Match scorecard

Jonathan Batty completed a marathon century as Surrey took charge of their Division One match against Kent.

Resuming on 251-4, Surrey set about building a big score and Batty's 136 off 343 balls, taking seven and a half hours, was the basis of their 397.

Martin van Jaarsveld replied with 95 not out for Kent.

But two wickets for Pakistan's Abdul Razzaq on his Championship debut meant the visitors were still 13 short of the follow-on at stumps on 235-7.

Joe Denly got Kent off to a flyer with five boundaries, but perished for 26 to a reckless hook shot off Dernbach.

Saqlian Mushtaq was the main protagonist, taking 3-62, with wickets falling at regular intervals as the visitors slumped to 185-7.

But Van Jaarsveld held firm, reaching 50 off 70 balls and then sharing in an unbroken stand of 50 for the eighth wicket with Ryan McLaren (25 not out) to offer the visitors hope, with Van Jaarsveld finishing five short of his hundred from 136 balls with 12 fours.

Earlier, Usman Afzaal provided able support to Batty with 57, while Robert Joseph and James Tredwell took three wickets apiece for Kent.
