County Championship D2, Chelmsford: Essex 365-7 v Derbyshire Match scorecard
Essex overcame a poor start to amass 365-7 on the opening day against Derbyshire at Chelmsford.
Two wickets were down with only 10 on the board, and when Ravi Bopara was superbly caught at slip it was 42-3.
But England opener Alastair Cook was prolific off the back foot, before he was well caught at short mid-wicket after 13 fours in a 143-ball innings.
Ryan ten Doeschate, who made 132 at Derby late last season, then blasted 14 fours and a six in an unbeaten 118.
After Bopara was superbly snared at third slip by a jumping Jake Needham for seven, Cook shared 81 with Mark Pettini, who made an entertaining 40 before spinner Needham trapped him lbw.
Wickets continued to fall but Alex Tudor overcame a cautious start to fire some impressive shots, completing fifty with a six over extra-cover off Wavell Hinds, in an unbroken stand of 126 in 31 overs.
