Middlesex made it two wins out of two as they comfortably beat Essex by seven wickets in the Twenty20 Cup.

Tim Murtagh was the pick of the bowlers at Lord's as Essex, who were put in to bat, were restricted to 115-9.

The hosts lost Andrew Strauss for 11 but Ed Smith (33) and Eoin Morgan shared a decisive second-wicket stand of 67 in eight overs.

Morgan fell for 47 off 36 balls with seven runs needed but the Crusaders ambled home with 19 balls to spare.

With Middlesex employing five bowling changes in the first 10 overs, Essex never really got going after being put in by home captain Ed Smith.

Only loanee Neil Dexter showed any kind of form, with 46 from 40 balls, and they soon found themselves in trouble on 40-3.

Mural Kartik removed Grant Flower and Ryan ten Doeschate in consecutive overs as the middle order failed to fire, while Tim Murtagh (3-24) picked up a brace of victims in his last over.

Dexter, having swept Shaun Udal for a towering six, was the eighth wicket to fall when he was caught at deep cover by Kartik off Tyron Henderson, and Essex's total never looked like being enough.

They needed early wickets but although Strauss was bowled by Graham Napier, once Smith and Morgan were into their stride the game was up for the visitors.
