Durham win despite Patel heroics

Riverside: Durham 189-9 (49 overs) beat Notts 188 all out (47.2 overs) by one wicket

Samit Patel celebrates a century for Notts
Patel was the only Notts player to make any impression

A brilliant individual performance from Samit Patel could not prevent holders Durham winning a dramatic FP trophy quarter-final against Nottinghamshire.

The all-rounder scored 114 of Notts's total of 181, smashing 17 boundaries and two sixes in his 113-ball innings.

He then took 3-27 as Durham struggled to reach their target after a confident start from Michael di Venuto (70).

Wickets fell at regular intervals before Gareth Breese (34 not out) kept his nerve to score the winnings runs.

Durham had been cruising at 127-1, but lost eight wickets in the space of 52 runs to set up a tense finish at Chester-le-Street.

Patel's maiden one-day century lifted Nottinghamshire from 102-8 to 188 all out before contributing three wickets in the home side's batting collapse.

The all-rounder hit 17 fours and two sixes in his score of 114 from 113 balls, with his second 50 coming off just 30 balls.

Durham seemed to be cruising thanks to a 107-run second-wicket partnership between Di Venuto and Will Smith, but left-arm spinner Patel sparked a Nottinghamshire fightback when he had Smith caught and bowled for 41.

Mark Pattinson soon removed Australian Di Venuto as the visitors began to make inroads into Durham's batting line-up.

And when Mark Ealham dismissed Steve Harmison, a Nottinghamshire victory looked ominous.

However, big hitting from Jamaican Breese ensured the holders progressed through to the last four of the competition with 16 balls to spare.
