Durham progress halted by weather

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE
Riverside, day three of four (close): Durham 224 & 76-2 v Surrey 183

Durham were 117 ahead at 76-2 in their second innings when rain ended day three before tea at the Riverside.

They took the ascendancy having bowled Surrey out for 183 for a first innings lead of 43, Graham Onions striking in the first over and finishing with 4-73.

Ali Brown hit five fours and a six in his 38 from 54 balls but the innings quickly subsided and he was last out.

Durham lost both openers lbw, Saqlain Mushtaq striking in his second over, but built a good lead before rain came.

England Lions seamer Graham Onions, who had taken the first three of the four Surrey wickets to fall on Thursday, produced the perfect leg-stump yorker to send back left-hander Usman Afzaal with the fifth ball of the day.

Chris Jordan did not have the chance to display his batting talents as indecision from Brown left him stranded by Dale Benkenstein's direct hit and on his way for a three-ball duck.

After Neil Killeen struck twice, Phil Mustard failed to hang on to an inside edge from Brown off Mark Davies, but the bowler had his reward when a wild swing by Saqlain Mushtaq resulted in an edge into the keeper's gloves.

Steve Harmison, brought on for the day's 15th over, failed to produce the sort of form to make the England selectors take note ahead of the Test series with New Zealand, but he took his only wicket of the innings when Brown steered to third man, where Killeen took a good low catch.
