Division Two leaders Yorkshire produced a poor batting display to go down to a five-wicket Pro40 defeat by Surrey.

Matt Nicholson, Mo Akram and Chris Jordan reduced them to 58-8 but Darren Gough (49no) and David Wainwright (26) lifted the total to a healthier 145.

But that was never going to seriously test Surrey once James Benning (37) and Scott Newman (30) had quickly added 60.

Four quick wickets fell to make it 96-4 but skipper Mark Butcher hit 34 as they eased home with almost 11 overs left.

England Test skipper Michael Vaughan was ruled out after suffering a back spasm, while Gough could only bowl two overs because of soreness in his shin.

It added injury to Yorkshire's insult of losing their unbeaten record, which came about after they lost seven wickets for 29 runs once Craig White was caught behind off Nicholson.

Akram enjoyed a burst of three for five in 17 deliveries when he switched to the pavilion end and Jordan pinned former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq lbw on the back foot in a five-over spell of three for 18.

Butcher surprisingly turned to his spinners and Gough and Wainwright added 72 in 16 overs, with Gough sweeping Chris Schofield for two sixes over mid-wicket.

Gough conceded 16 runs off his two overs and the Surrey openers rattled up 60 in seven as the visitors cantered to victory.
