Hoggard grabs four in Oval rout

England seamer Matthew Hoggard claimed 4-34 as Yorkshire cruised to a mammoth 346-run win against Surrey at The Oval.

Darren Gough (3-50) and leg-spinner Adil Rashid (3-64) also got in on the action as only opener Scott Newman (89) scored more than 15 runs for Surrey.

Chasing an improbable 517 to win, they resumed on 47-1 and Gough quickly trapped Mark Ramprakash lbw for five.

Hoggard took four wickets in 38 balls to rip out the middle order before Rashid grabbed the last two wickets.

New Yorkshire skipper Gough also captured the wickets of all-rounder Rikki Clarke, who was bowled, and seamer James Ormond, who was caught behind by keeper Gerard Brophy.

Newman lasted 118 balls for his defiant knock, which included 17 boundaries, before he became the fourth of Hoggard's victims when he was also caught by Brophy.

Nayan Doshi (15) was the second highest scorer in the innings but he was the last man out, caught by Younis Khan off Rashid.

Gough said: "We could surprise a few teams this year along the way if we play this sort of cricket. The body language was excellent throughout.

"I'm not saying we'll play like that every game. We're going to lose games but hopefully we'll win games also.

"To have played against a quality side like Surrey, where nearly every player is a Test player, and to put up a performance like that with bat and ball on an excellent wicket was awesome."
