County Championship D2, Northampton, day one: Northants 310 v Glos 15-2
Steve Kirby took five wickets as Glos dismissed Northants for 310, but lost two early wickets to close an eventful opening day at Wantage Road at 15-2.
Northants chose to bat and looked set for a big total when Stephen Peters and Usman Afzaal compiled a stand of 122.
Former England international Afzaal brought up his fourth half-century of the season, before Kirby removed his middle and off stumps.
The hosts lost five wickets for 14 but the late strikes redressed the balance.
Peters and Afzaal put on 97 before lunch after Chris Rogers departed for four in the third over when his pull shot off Carl Greenidge found Vikram Banerjee on the boundary.
Riki Wessels was dropped on 12 by Spearman and went on to score his 50 before edging Kirby to Hamish Marshall at second slip.
Former Yorkshire paceman Kirby ousted Monty Panesar for a duck and wrapped up a five-wicket haul when a shorter delivery caught the bottom of Johan van der Wath's bat and went straight to the keeper.
