Essex enhanced their promotion hopes with maximum points in an innings and two run victory over leaders Surrey.
James Middlebrook hit 14 fours and a six in his second century of the campaign as the home side took their total to a commanding 530.
Faced with a deficit of 200, Surrey were soon in more trouble when Andy Bichel's yorker bowled Jon Batty and fiery Alex Tudor got Stewart Walters.
The final three wickets fell for 28 in 10 overs as a final day was not needed.
