Northamptonshire lost three wickets for 61 runs as they made their reply to Surrey's 328 on day one.
Surrey's Ali Brown made 113, but received limited support with only Mark Ramprakash (51) and Rikki Clarke (47) making decent contributions.
Fast bowler Matt Nicholson took 4-84, while Ben Phillips had figures of 3-58.
But Northamptonshire's reply started poorly, with Bilal Shafayat out for a duck, Robert White going for 15 and Sourav Ganguly for six.
