County Championship D2, The Oval, day three (stumps): Surrey 308 & 224-3 v Derbyshire 492
Surrey hit back after being forced to follow on to set up an intriguing final day against Derbyshire at The Oval.
Mo Sheikh put in a disciplined effort to take 5-65 as the hosts were bundled out for 308, having been 265-4.
That left them 184 behind but most of the deficit was wiped out when openers Scott Newman (90) and Jon Batty (96) responded with an opening stand of 152.
They and Mark Ramprakash fell as Surrey closed on 224-3, an overall lead of 40, with much work to do to secure a draw.
Sheikh was the star earlier, bowling tight lines and benefiting from some gentle swing, but some poor shot selection helped him along.
The last three wickets fell for one run but Surrey were more sensible second time around as Newman added to the 66 he made in the first innings.
He and Ramprakash both played on, while Batty thumped two sixes before Ian Hunter bowled him.
