County Championship D2, The Oval, day one (stumps): Surrey v Derbyshire 392-6
Australian batsman Travis Birt hit 99 as Derbyshire enjoyed the better of day one against Surrey at The Oval.
The left-hander displayed a handsome range of shots - one of his four sixes off spinner Nayan Doshi caused a break in play to search for the lost ball.
Hassan Adnan made 88 and Mike Di Venuto 60 as Surrey were put to the sword.
Azhar Mahmood (4-62) removed Adnan and Graeme Welch off successive balls but Ant Botha (61) ensured Derbyshire ended the day in a strong position on 392-6.
Di Venuto got the innings off to a flying start in the 2,000th first class match to be played at The Oval with 13 fours and the visitors profited after Mohammad Akram was forced out of the attack with a groin injury.
The Pakistani paceman pulled up when bowling the first ball of his third over and, although he managed to bowl one more delivery, Mahmood had to take over.
