Robin Martin-Jenkins produced a fine innings to help Sussex earn a 130-run lead on day two at Hove against Surrey.
But the visitors hit back before the close, reducing the deficit by 54 thanks to Scott Newman's 46 not out.
Earlier, it seemed Surrey, inspired by Azhar Mahmood's 5-72, would have the advantage after the first innings.
Sussex slipped from 104-2 to 180-6 before Martin-Jenkins (88) marshalled the tail superbly to help them recover to their final total of 378.
