Sussex held the early edge after a varied opening day's cricket at Hove in the Division One match against Surrey.
Mark Ramprakash hit 97 for the visitors, but there were also plenty of failures with only Azhar Mahmood's 57 taking them up to a moderate 248.
Mushtaq Ahmed and Luke Wright shared six wickets for the hosts.
In reply, Sussex were 104-2 at stumps with Richard Montgomerie out just before stumps for 68. James Kirtley staved off 12 balls as nightwatchman.
