Notts hold on for thrilling draw
County Championship D1, Trent Bridge: Surrey 136 & 292-6 dec drew with Nottinghamshire 226 & 169-8
Points: Nottinghamshire 8, Surrey 7

Surrey and leaders Nottinghamshire settled for a draw after a frenetic final day at Trent Bridge.

Chasing a target of 203 from 40 overs, Notts were cruising at 161-5 before three wickets fell in five balls to force them to shut up shop.

David Alleyne (40) fell to Nayan Doshi, Mark Ealham was run out in a mix-up and Azhar Mahmood then bowled Graeme Swann.

Rikki Clarke earlier hit 127 not out - his best of the season - before Surrey made a daring declaration on 292-6.

After losing a day and a half to rain, Notts were frustrated by a fourth-wicket partnership of 85 between Clarke and Jon Batty, who made 32.

Clarke rode his luck, twice edging Ealham through the slips in one over to move from 84 to 92.

After Mark Ramprakash called his batsmen in, Martin Bicknell bowled Notts skipper Jason Gallian in the third over, and then caught his brother Darren at gully off Azhar Mahmood in the next over.

A partnership of 71 in 12 overs between Alleyne and Ealham seemed to have left the home side set fair for the win, needing 42 off eight overs.

But the tumble of wickets forced tail-enders Ryan Sidebottom and Greg Smith to block out the last seven overs to share the points.
