Australian Andrew Symonds hit a century and took two crucial wickets on his Lancashire debut to set his side on course for a 35-run win over Sussex.

Andrew Flintoff took 3-30 in the C&G Trophy quarter-final to restrict the visitors to 214-8 at Old Trafford.

All-rounder Symonds stood tall with 101 as his side recovered from the loss of two early wickets to reach 249-8.

Matt Prior (59) and Chris Adams (48) shared a stand of 95 but Sussex's lower order failed to stay on the pace.

We knew if we could hang in there and get a wicket it would be hard for them
Andrew Symonds

Symonds repaired early damage to the innings after the dismissals of Stuart Law and Mal Loye, adding 118 with fellow Aussie debutant Marcus North.

Sussex hit back, through the tight bowling of Mushtaq Ahmed and then Naved-ul-Hasan, both finishing with three wickets.

One of Mushtaq's victims was Flintoff, who shuffled too far down the wicket to the leg-spinner and was stumped for five.

Lancashire bowlers James Anderson and Dominic Cork began tightly enough but the game was in the balance until Prior was out slog-sweeping Gary Keedy and Symonds bowled Adams.

Symonds described his performance as an "ideal day".

"For the team, the whole season has got some reasoning to it," he said.

"We don't want to get too far ahead and think about Lancashire in finals yet but if we play good cricket maybe at some stage we can win trophies.

"The surface was not an easy one. We knew if we could hang in there and get a wicket it would be hard for them."
