Udal stands up to defeat Surrey
Twenty20 Cup, The Oval: Hampshire 119-7 (17.5 overs) beat Surrey 118 (15.3 overs) by three wickets

New captain Shaun Udal batted Hampshire to their first win of this Twenty20 campaign, and handed Surrey just their second ever defeat in the competition.

The Lions were bowled out for 118 at The Oval, despite Rikki Clarke's 44-ball 52, with Richard Logan taking 4-37 and Udal 2-6 in nine balls.

Hampshire stumbled to 66-7 before Udal, standing in as skipper with Shane Warne rested, joined Jimmy Adams.

They got home with 13 balls left, Udal hitting 34 not out, with four fours.

Surrey went unbeaten in winning the inaugural Twenty20 title in 2003 and their only loss last season was to Leicestershire in the tournament final.

A crowd of 11,000 took the total of spectators watching Surrey's three matches so far to 41,000.

They were silenced as the Lions collapsed in poor light.

But the hosts would have been in a worse state if Adams and Sean Ervine had taken chances in the deep off Clarke when he was on nine and 38.

He faced 44 balls and hit six fours and one six, most of them to the short boundary at the Archbishop Tenison's School side of the ground.
