Surrey opener Richard Clinton produced the stand-out contribution on an rain-interrupted first day against Warwickshire at Whitgift School.

Clinton hit 84 in a total of 214-4 after the hosts had won the toss at their outground in Croydon.

The best partnership was easily the 112-run stand for the second wicket between Clinton and Mark Ramprakash.

Home skipper Ramprakash provided 39 runs with Harbhajan Singh not yet required on his Surrey debut.

But he will be hoping to defend a decent total when he bowls his off-spin later in the match after Jon Batty (21) and Ali Brown (39) added 60 runs for the fifth wicket during the closing overs of the day.

Warwickshire's four seamers all claimed one wicket apiece.
