Clarke calls shots against Kent
County Championship D1, Tunbridge Wells, day two (close):
Kent 262 & 37-1; Surrey 324

All-rounder Rikki Clarke compiled the sixth hundred of his career to give Surrey a useful lead over Kent on the second day at Tunbridge Wells.

Clarke batted for almost four hours for his 124 off 188 balls before he was caught off laft-arm spinner Min Patel.

Ali Brown weighed in with 56 as Surrey totalled 324, despite figures of 6-124 by the persevering Patel.

Kent began their second innings 62 in arrears and were 37-1 at the close with skipper David Fulton out for 18.

The home side began well by reducing Surrey to 67-3, with Patel dismissing Scott Newman (24) and in-form Mark Ramprakash (four) and Martin Saggers bowling Richard Clinton (33).

But Jon Batty helped Clarke add 99 for the fourth wicket, making 34 before he was caught behind off Patel by Niall O'Brien.

Clarke and Brown then shared a stand of 107 but once Brown hit Darren Stevens to Andrew Hall, the innings went into free fall.

Stevens claimed 3-22 with his medium pace as the last six wickets went down for 51 runs - Clarke eventually caught by Simon Cook.

Kent had 16 overs to survive in reply, but Fulton was caught by James Benning off Mohammad Akram.

Night-watchman Saggers blocked out seven deleiveries without scoring, and first innings centurion Rob Key finished 18 not out at the other end.
