Frizzell County Championship D1, Brit Oval
Sussex 370 v Surrey 33-1 (stumps, day three)
Surrey and Sussex face the choice of trying to contrive a positive result or settling for a draw after a soggy third day at The Oval.
Only 14 overs of play was possible as the home side advanced to 33-1 in reply to Sussex's first innings total of 370.
Acting skipper Mark Ramprakash was 16 not out and Richard Clinton was on 10 when the players left the field.
The home side had resumed on 6-1 and Sussex's attack could not make further inroads before the rain intervened.
James Kirtley, Jason Lewry and Robin Martin-Jenkins had conditions in their favour as the ball swung and moved off the seam.
The Surrey pair were watchful in defence, but Ramprakash did not waste the opportunity when a rare loose ball came his way as he drove Kirtley to the extra cover boundary.
Sussex coach Peter Moores, meanwhile, took time to acknowledge Matthew Prior's continuing advance during a second winter at the national Aacdemy.
Prior made a fluent 59 earlier in the game and Moores said: "He has tightened his game a lot and can play in quite a disciplined way now.
"He knows you need to be selective and that if he just looks to bat time, the runs will come for him anyway."
