Rain slows Surrey's fine progress
County Championship D1, The Oval (day three, stumps)
Middlesex 404-5 dec v Surrey 607-4

Just 33 overs were possible on day three of the Championship match at The Oval between relegated Surrey and Middlesex, who stay in Division One.

There was time for Mark Ramprakash to convert his overnight 200 not out into 242 and for Ashar Mahmood to move to 167, neither man being dismissed.

With their stand worth 190, the duo are just 18 runs short of a 97-year-old Surrey record for the fifth wicket.

Surrey's total is now 607-4, replying to Middlesex's 404-5 declared.

A possible target for Ramprakash, should Surrey continue batting on Saturday, will be to surpass his lifetime best score of 279 which he scored against Nottinghamshire two years ago.
