Surrey start badly at Edgbaston
County Championship D1, Edgbaston, day two (close): Surrey 225-9 v Warwickshire

Rikki Clarke struck 63 but three wickets apiece for Dougie Brown and James Anyon restricted Surrey to 225-9.

Following the opening day washout, bad light and drizzle delayed play on day two until mid-afternoon.

Bears skipper Nick Knight chose to put Surrey in, and South African paceman Makhaya Ntini soon ousted Scott Newman.

Clarke smashed 10 fours and a six in a rapid 63 off 59 balls but Anyon claimed his wicket and those of Jon Batty and Ali Brown in the space of nine runs.

Tim Murtagh, who was dropped by Ian Westwood at square leg, and Saqlain Mushtaq staged a brief recovery with some powerful strokes in an eighth-wicket stand of 44.

Umpire David Shepherd, in his last Championship game at Edgbaston had to move swiftly to avoid a ferocious square drive from Saqlain.

Meanwhile, South Africa coach Mickey Arthur has insisted that Ntini return on Tuesday evening for a training camp, but the Bears have said that they will continue to contest the issue.
