Rain prevents play at Edgbaston
County Championship D1, Edgbaston, day one: Warwickshire v Surrey
No play possible due to rain

Warwickshire's hopes of retaining their title faded with a first day wash-out against Surrey at Edgbaston.

Both sides were frustrated when play was abandoned in mid-afternoon as Surrey need to win the game to ease their relegation worries.

They will be without fast bowler James Ormond, who was injured while bowling in the England nets ahead of the fifth Ashes Test at The Oval.

Warwickshire are set to recall Neil Carter in place of James Anyon.

And they could include Makhaya Ntini, even though he is due to return to South Africa on Tuesday for training with the national squad.

Warwickshire claim the United Cricket Board are only entitled to recall him for international matches, but Ntini said "I can't say no - South Africa are my employers."
