Mark Ramprakash hit his highest score of the season as Surrey built a lead of 59 and counting over Gloucestershire.
Ramprakash came to the crease with the hosts 40-3 after losing nightwatchman Nayan Doshi and Mark Butcher.
But they were 409-7 by stumps, with Ramprakash 185 not out after stands of 98 with Graham Thorpe (36) and 133 with Jonathan Batty (56).
A sole highlight for the visitors came when spinner Malinga Bandara took two wickets in the space of three balls.
