Flower's defiance defeats Durham
County Championship D2, Southend, day four (close)
Essex 245 & 299-8 beat Durham 196 & 347 by two wickets

Points: Essex 18, Durham 3

A defiant unbeaten 132 from Andy Flower steered Essex to a tense two-wicket victory over Durham at Southend.

The home side, chasing 299 to beat the leaders, resumed on 129-2 but lost captain Ronnie Irani for 48.

They continued to lose wickets at regular intervals, Gareth Breese, Mick Lewis and Liam Plunkett all taking two.

But Flower, who hit 11 fours, remained resolute at one end, and after Essex went to tea still needing two more runs, he wrapped up victory soon after.
